stunt bots

In the scrapbook this week: Hayao Miyazaki and Jean Smith

Hey guys,

Some new things:

  1. Mr. Miyazaki's creative process, in 43 screenshots!

  2. These are some of Jean Smith's portraits, and they're only $100. Distinct, weird, kinda creepy. And she's making a living at it. She's also the lead singer of Mecca Normal.

  3. Generational theory is interesting to know about, as it urges us to step outside our immediate sphere and see the bigger picture. If you've ever studied the movement of the planets, or the seasons, or the shape of a life, you might see they all follow a similar pattern. The cycle wheel seems to accurately show we're hitting a period of major war, and it may be a while before the subsequent new era starts. What does this mean for our current culture? Is it doomed for a while? Can we look back at the previous Crisis period (WWII) for guidance, seeing what art broke through the masses back then and what art lasted?

  4. The French gentleman thief and master of disguise Lupin makes a return in a really really good series.  (But why, why is this full trailer on the official Netflix channel ridiculously dubbed??)

There's also this new Lupin III Japanese animation (which has an English dubbed version).  And a whole history of anime.

As for the new Netflix version, Omar Sy is great. His breakout role was in the The Intouchables, which was also great and didn't have to be remade with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston.

  5. Liminal spaces.

  6. In the robot world: just learning about stunt bots now.

  7. Did you know there's a "lost" promotional track for 2001: A Space Odyssey? Get it for £1.50
