In the scrapbook this week: remakes, reboots, and an exclusive clip

Hey guys,

Some new things:

  1. Leading up to the Bushwick Film Fest premiere, we've put up a first clip from Alberto and the Concrete Jungle. And it was debuted with Flickering Myth

If you were planning on seeing the full film or telling anyone to see it, Bushwick's gotten a little more organized and they have an individual rent page up -- available for limited time Oct 21-25.

  2. Here's a revival I approve of. Silly enough to be necessary.

  3. And here's a new adaptation I'm curious about. Patrice Leconte has made some movies I greatly admire with a very clear voice and clear fixations -- so many of the best artists make the same thing over and over -- see if you notice the similarity in plot and dynamics.  Watch hereherehere...

This Tintin will likely be less flashy.  That said, I'll be missing Spielberg's visual choreography. You may take it for granted because it's so fluid and intuitive. But it's pure orchestrated wit and artistry. Though his tone isn't always morally grey, doesn't mean he lacks sophistication. That's something Marvel hasn't pulled together since the 2nd Spiderman. Remember -- you can demand more from your happy meals.

  4. And here's a remake that has no reason. Because while I like the story, is it really so great that I need to see it again, even with whatever modernizations and extra twists the studio deems necessary?

The original was from Alejandro Amenábar, and here's something else from him I can watch over and over. A quadriplegic daydreams. Puccini makes him fly. This is Puccini too.

  5. Another paralysis movie scene comes to mind. The prison of the body forces the imagination to reach new realms of longing...

  6. ...and while we're on the art of the montage, especially the archival montage, sometimes simplicity is king. No need for perfect edits. Or perfect shots. Just hit the right piece of music. And let it be human.
