electric music in 1970

In the scrapbook this week: Minari and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Hey guys,

Some new things:

  1. A demonstration of electronic music in 1970.

  2. See Christopher Plummer play the piano on the set of The Sound of Music in between takes. That tune at the beginning sounded familiar, and sure enough, it's this one... which I know better from one of my favorites, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, where the great composer Michel Legrand really milks it in a number of beautifully sad romantic scenes like this and this.

The ending of La La Land isn't quite as special when you know of the complicated love in Umbrellas as well as New York, New York (both with more rapturous headlining songs).

  3. For those that have ever scrolled through their Venmo feed. My transactions are private. Please keeps yours public for my viewing pleasure.

  4. I tapped into my street view curiosity a little bit with Alberto. I have a long-term project inspired by it -- hoping to get back to it some day if I can interest the right partners.

  5. Profiles of the social-media-less. Super strange to scroll through and see someone I know in it.

  6. Here's a worthy film among the award contenders.  Minari has a standout cast, with Youn Yuh-jung getting so much to do as the grandma, and the kid Alan Kim very cute and funny. It's terrific, maybe because it's not bound to the world it portrays. I wouldn't say I know the culture well, or the time period, or the location... yet it doesn't matter, because its focus, its tension, its varied tones, are all universal enough.  (At times, the look does feel a little too vague and contemporary)

Steven Yeun says it well here, in a convo with Riz Ahmed (who does have the meatier role in Sound of Metal).  Steven's foreigner-speaking-English accent slips at times in this film, but other than that, it's a very strong performance... he's on a roll, as it's on the heels of being perfectly cast in Burning.

  7. I met Kate a year and a half ago as she was organizing her business. She's now helping employees balance their relationships with themselves and others. Get on her calendar to discover what it's all about.
